Cable Comes to Akron
Time Warner Cable’s motto speaks volumes about the company’s innovative spirit, and its historical roots in Northeast Ohio. Many of the technological advances in the cable television industry started right here. (See timeline)
The Power of you: QUBED
In 1979, Time Warner created the first two-way interactive cable system, “QUBE.” Developed in Columbus, QUBE was loved by the national media because it offered viewers the chance to “vote” and answer questions via the system’s polling technology. QUBE even led to the development of Nickelodeon and MTV. Throughout the 70s and 80s, Akron's cable television system grew from 12 channels to 24, then 35, and more than 50 channels, including sports, news and additional movie channels.
High-speed Internet
On September 9, 1996, Akron was the scene of another cable technology first: The national debut of Time Warner’s Road Runner high-speed online internet service. Today, Time Warner Cable is one of the only cable companies to offer a choice of multiple Internet Service Providers. In addition to Road Runner, customers can choose from AOL and Earthlink Broadband, and other regional service providers.
Time Warner Cable’s HFC network remains an unequaled platform for the introduction of new, advanced services in Northeast Ohio, including digital television, Digital Video Recorders, video-on-demand, high definition television (HDTV) and, most recently, Digital Phone, a 21st Century telephone service using digital technology – but not the public internet.
World-class service
Customer satisfaction is at the heart of Time Warner Cable products and services. To solidify that commitment, Time Warner Cable introduced the On-Time Guarantee, one of the most successful customer service programs in the country.
Community education
Few community issues are more important to Time Warner Cable’s customers than education. That’s why the cornerstone of the company’s public service effort has been to deliver the power of cable television technology and programming to schools at no charge.
From home to business to the classroom, Time Warner Cable is proud to serve the Northeast Ohio area for 40 years, standing firmly by its motto: “The Power of You.”
