• DuPont has partnered with Mohawk, the leading carpet manufacturer in the United States, to produce residential carpeting sold under the brand name SmartStrand® with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer. This is the first carpet to offer both exceptional performance and environmental benefits.
• DuPont™ Sorona®, the primary ingredient in SmartStrand® carpeting, is 37 percent renewably sourced¹, meaning renewable resources or agricultural feedstocks are used to replace petroleum-based feedstocks in one of the two ingredients used to make Sorona®.
• Production of Sorona® requires 30 percent less energy than an equal amount of petroleum-based nylon 6.
• The production of Sorona® creates 63 percent less greenhouse gas emissions (CO2) than nylon 6 on a pound-for-pound basis.²
• Every seven square yards of SmartStrand® carpet made with Sorona® saves the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline.³
• Sorona® polymer is manufactured in a continuous process, resulting in fewer processing problems and less waste generation.
• The United States supplies approximately 45 percent of the world’s residential carpet; in fact, carpet covers nearly 70 percent of the residential flooring in the United States. (source: Carpet and Rug Institute).
• In 2005, U.S. industry shipments of residential carpet totaled 2.057 billion squre yards. If just 20 percent of the residential carpet sold in the United States annually used DuPont™ Sorona®, the energy equivalent of approximately 50 million gallons of gasoline could be saved every year.***
• In addtion to its environmental benefits, carpet made with Sorona® has been tested to perform equal to or better than comparable nylon carpets in resilience and appearance retention. Its performance attributes include:
     •Permanent natural stain resistance – unlike topical stain treatments that can wash or wear off, carpeting made with Sorona® offers permanent, built-in stain protection.
     •Exceptional softness, durability and crush resistance.
• SmartStrand® with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer in residential carpeting is exclusively from Mohawk and is available in over 7,000 retail outlets, including The Home Depot.
