BAX® detection system: A fast and accurate way to detect bacteria in raw ingredients, finished products and environmental samples. The genetics-based method reduces false positives, minimizes re-testing and provides a high confidence level in results. The system has been adopted by the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service for detecting Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7 and Listeria monocytogenes. It has also been approved for use by government agencies in Canada, Brazil, Sweden, Denmark and Japan, as well as method-certified by AOAC International, AOAC Research Institute and AFNOR.
BAX® system instruments do not require highly specialized skills and deliver clear, reproducible results independent of operator technique. This system handles high capacity loads of up to 96 samples per batch, and delivers results within a few hours of loading the rack (about 3.5 hours for standard PCR assays; 90 minutes or less for real-time PCR assays). Electronic LIMS-compatible data record allows for easy storage, retrieval and printing. Original “classic” BAX® system instruments use intercalating dye chemistry for fluorescent detection (yes-or-no) of DNA strands. Next-generation BAX® system Q7 instruments, developed in alliance with Applied Biosystems, use probe-based chemistry for fluorescent detection plus differentiation and quantitative results.
BAX® system kits detect the presence or absence of Salmonella, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria species, Listeria monocytogenes, Enterobacter sakazakii, Campylobacter jejuni/coli, and yeast and mold. These kits provide a single platform for most standard PCR assays, which allows testing for multiple targets in the same batch. Real-time PCR assays not only detect presence of bacteria, but also differentiate among several targets in the same sample, delivering a quantitative value for each. PCR reagent tablets, which minimize operator error and provide for consistency and long shelf-life, contain controls and ingredients to overcome PCR inhibition. Proprietary powdered enrichment media for Listeria and E. coli O157:H7 MP shortens and simplifies sample preparation.
DuPont™ StatMedia™ soluble packets serve as a convenient packaging system for microbial enrichment media with same performance as bulk powder. The pre-weighed, unit-dose quantities come in water soluble packets, eliminating dust exposure and ergonomic issues associated with handling bulk media powder. This approach saves money by reducing media preparation costs and minimizing waste from expired batches of prepared broth.
RiboPrinter® microbial characterization system provides an automated genetic snapshot (RiboPrint™ pattern) of environmental isolates, pathogens, spoilage organisms, control strains, beneficial organisms and any bacterium. Its database of over 6,400 patterns provides quick identification of bacterial species. It also offers accurate characterization below the species level, along with historical and other associated data, and gives users the power to pinpoint sources of bacterial contamination, identify trends and gain control of the microbial environment. Information is available in less than eight hours, giving pharmaceutical, personal care and food safety organizations a true competitive advantage over companies that use dated testing technology.
