DuPont™ SentryGlas® Fact Sheet

DuPont™ SentryGlas®

  • SentryGlas® is comprised of safety glass interlayers for laminated glass constructions that far exceed the performance of standard glass by providing enhanced safety, security and sound control benefits.
  • SentryGlas® was the first product line to allow windows and doors to meet the stringent hurricane building codes established in southeastern Florida. The brand also meets the code requirements for the International Residential Code & the International Building Code covering coastal areas from Texas to New England.
  • SentryGlas® helps enable the glass in windows and doors to break safely with fragments staying adhered to the interlayer. It also helps provide intrusion resistance from those who attempt to unlawfully enter facilities through windows and doors.
  • SentryGlas® helps provide hurricane protection that is incorporated into windows and glass doors.
  • SentryGlas® helps reduce the noise from street traffic, emergency vehicle sirens, landscaping equipment and low flying airplanes. It also helps screen out the damaging effects of harmful UV rays.
  • Builders can learn more about DuPont™ SentryGlas® by visiting www.dupont.com/safetyglass or by calling 800-438-7225.

DuPont™ SentryGlas® Plus

  • SentryGlas® Plus is 100 times stiffer and five times stronger than traditional interlayers for structural glazing applications, such as minimally supported facades, skylights, balustrades, and flooring.
  • SentryGlas® Plus offers superior strength, edge stability and an ultra-clear appearance when combined with low iron glass.
  • SentryGlas® Plus allows larger windows and doors to meet hurricane code requirements, and windows and doors of all sizes to achieve higher design pressures.

DuPont™ SentryGlas® Expressions™

  • SentryGlas® Expressions™ enables virtually any image, whether a design or photograph, solid color or continuous tone, with thick lines or thin, to be faithfully and vibrantly reproduced in laminated safety glass.
  • SentryGlas® Expressions™ enables textures and images to be incorporated into a range of architectural glass applications such as entry doors, overhead glazing and balustrades with speed and flexibility.
  • SentryGlas® Expressions™ offers the many benefits of laminated glass including safety, security, excellent outdoor weatherability, protection from ultraviolet rays, noise reduction and solar/thermal control.

DuPont Safety Glass Technology: Added Protection, Comfort in New Auto Designs

  • In response to consumer demands for brighter, more open vehicle interiors, auto industry experts predict that by 2010, 40 percent of all new cars will feature sunroofs. Additionally, the use of panoramic sunroofs, which provide even greater exposure to the exterior environment, is increasing rapidly. As sunroofs grow in size, so do vehicle weight and concerns about safety in the event of impact.
  • As a solution to both safety and weight concerns, DuPont introduced DuPont™ Spallshield® composite interlayer technology, which enables the use of laminated glass with improved protective capabilities and reduced weight.
  • With the need for increasing safety in automobiles, DuPont has a number of exciting research developments in light control, light-weighting and new structural materials that can improve passenger comfort and safety.
  • Spallshield® is a plastic composite that provides up to eight times the impact performance of standard laminated glass. Two layers of plastic are laminated to a single layer of glass with the plastic on the inside, protecting passengers from glass shards from exterior impact and from the potential of ejection in the event of a roll-over accident. By essentially eliminating one layer of glass from a standard glass laminate and replacing it with an abrasion resistant polyester film, weight reductions of up to 30 percent can be achieved. The technology has already been adopted by DaimlerChrysler for its Mercedes S and R Class vehicles.
  • Larger sunroofs translate into more exposure to sunlight and higher energy transmission into the vehicle. Working with electrochromics, DuPont scientists are developing technology for “smart windows” that will enable motorists to dynamically control the amount of light and solar energy coming into vehicles.

DuPont Hurricane Resistant Glass Technology Honored for Protecting U.S. Federal Courthouse
Lifesaving DuPont protective glass technology used at Miami's new Federal Courthouse has been recognized by the nonprofit Protecting People First Foundation with its Safety Award.

The U.S. General Services Administration was awarded the honor for the new Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Courthouse, the first in the country designed to withstand both bomb blasts and hurricane-force winds. The new building, the largest federal courthouse in the United States, spanning two city blocks, meets Miami's stringent hurricane codes as well as US government security standards for blast mitigation. The courthouse is part of the GSA’s Design Excellence Program, which commissions designers and artists to improve the design and quality of federal buildings.

“We take very seriously our responsibility to construct government buildings and facilities that provide a safe environment for employees, as well as the public,” said Edwin E. Fielder, Jr., regional administrator of GSA’s Southeast Sunbelt Regional Office.

DuPont Butacite® and SentryGlas® Plus laminated glass interlayers are integral to the courthouse design in windows supplied by glass fabricator Viracon Inc.

Founded in 2000, in the wake of the 1995 Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City, the Protecting People First Foundation has advocated the use of new technologies to make buildings safer.
